Abstract:
This study examines the environmental conditions of mining and mineral processing sites in the Niger Delta Area of Nigeria with special reference to Ondo State, Nigeria. For the purpose of the study, field data were collected on the location, locality, mining status and environmental conditions of solid mineral deposits in the states that make up the Niger Delta area of Nigeria. Hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers were used to determine the location of each site visited. Physical assessment of the environmental degradation as a result of oil and gas exploitation and unfriendly mining and mineral processing practices was done. The area was characterized by great biological diversity with sensitive and fragile ecosystem resulting from dangerous mining and mineral processing practices. To ensure good mining and mineral processing in the area, an integrated reclamation scheme has been developed.
