The study was to quantify the effect of Plan Ghana assisted irrigation dams on food security in the
Sissala West District, Ghana. The sample (N = 397 households) consisted of three groups of communities; 1-
and 2-year intervention groups and a control group. Anaemia was assessed using the heamocue system and
interviews conducted using structured questionnaire. We found that participants who had used the dam for 1
year were about 3 times more likely to be food secure (OR= 0.0228; 95 % CI: 0.012-0.063) whereas those
who had used the dam for 2 years were about 5 times more likely to be food secure (OR=0.045; 95%
CI: 0.020-0.101) compared to the control community. W e also found that 26, 30.3 and 20.4% of the women
in 2-, 1-year intervention groups and control communities respectively were anaemic. The dams had positive
effects on food security. The full potential of the project was however, not exploited. W e recommend more
education on the irrigation culture.
