The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of aqueous root extract of Treculia
africana on blood glucose levels, AST, ALT, and LDH activities, as well as body weight of normal rabbits.
Oral administration of aqueous root extract of Treculia africana at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight, for a
period of 21 days, caused a significant (p<0.05) reduction in glucose concentration and AST activity, and a
slight decrease in ALT activity. The treatment also showed no significant (p>0.05) effect on LDH activity and
a slight increase in body weight of the test animals. These effects of the plant are a reflection of its
hypoglycemic and hepatoprotective properties, as well as its relative safety and possible use for weight gain.
