Hepatic compromise has been identified in malaria infection but information in South Western
Nigeria is scarcely documented, hence this study was conducted in Ikeja, a major city in South Western Nigeria.
Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
activities, bilirubin (total, conjugated and unconjugated), total protein (TP) and albumin (ALB) levels were
assayed in 230 patients, age range: 0-50 years, presenting with acute, uncomplicated falciparum malaria
infection and in 224 subjects without malaria infection. The malaria patients and control subjects were age –
and sex-matched. Patients’ selection was done by simple random sampling of males and females presenting
at Kowa Diagnostic Laboratory Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria, with a history of fever and malaise not lasting more
than seven (7) days and who were subsequently confirmed to be malaria positive by microscopic examination
of Leishman-Stained thin blood slides. AST, ALT, ALP activities, conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin, TP
and ALB levels were 37.6±5.5, 34.8±5.4, 104.32±8.0 :/L, 3.8±1.0, 0.24±0.04, 3.6±0.5, 7.4±0.3 mg/dL and
3.84±0.24 g/dL for the falciparum malaria patients and 7.4±0.9, 7.9±1.2, 35.7±0.7 :/L, 1.4±0.6, 0.3±0.35,
1.2±0.1, 7.1±0.07 and 3.7±0.5 mg/dL for non-infected (control) subjects. These increases in the values (except
ALB and TP) for the falciparum malaria infected patients were significant (p<0.05) when compared with the
values for the non-infected subjects. Evidence from these data indicates a measure of liver dysfunction among
the malaria infected patients. Post-treatment data need to be documented in order to advise health care
providers.
