This research set out to assess the adequacy of the National Building Code for achieving a
sustainable built environment in Nigeria. In achieving this objective, research survey technique was used, with
a total of 50 well - structured questionnaires administered to professionals in the building industry, out of which
40 were received. Descriptive analysis, mean, percentages and ranking factors were used for data analysis.
Results showed that the introduction of the NBC is a step forward in improving the quality of building products
and hence, achieving sustainable built environment. It was also found that the code has incorporated few
sustainable construction measures. However, there are some problems that need to be addressed. Therefore,
it was recommended, as part of strategies in which the NBC can promote sustainable built environment, that
an efficient enforcement agency, should be established, adequately staffed and funded, to ensure the
implementation of the code, especially those provisions concerning sustainable construction. The document
should be reviewed to incorporate more sustainable construction measures, especially the use of sustainable
waste management and construction methods, renewable building materials, and enforcing environmental
impact assessment of projects.
