The aim of this study was to investigate some of the effects of aqueous extract of Ocimum sanctum on
glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase in adult male wistar rats (Rattus norvergicus). Thirty
two adult male wistar rats weighing between 150-230 g used in this experiment were divided into four groups of
eight (n = 8) animals each. Each animal in Group I, II, III and control were administered respectively with 250, 150,
50 mg/kg bw of the extract per day for a period of 3 weeks (21 days) through the oral route while the last group was
administered phosphate buffered saline as the control. At the end of this investigation, a dose-dependent increased
activity of the enzymes was observed. This observation affirms the earlier observed hepato-protective effect of Ocimum sanctum. This experiment also suggests that carbohydrates are facilitated more along the hexose
monophosphate pathway for G6PDH and the generation of lactate may serve as substrate for gluconeogenesis.
