The present study explains the rate of ammonium uptake by Gracilaria verrucosa from two different
concentrations (10 and 30 μ). The Mean uptake by Gracilaria verrucosa was estimated as 6.118 and 17.31
μ, when the ammonium conc. of 10 and 30 μ in the medium. Based on the rate of uptake, the process was
divided into four phases. In the first phase (with in 10 min) the rate of uptake was minimal (0.24 in 10 μ
initial conc. and 0.38 in 30 μ initial conc.). In the second phase (20 min to 1 h) maximum uptake was
observed (3.3059 and 12.1796 μ). In the third phase (1-6 h), the uptake process was moderate (2.5284 and
4.221 μ). In the Last phase (7-8 h) uptake rate was very less (0.235 and 0.9051 μ). The rates of ammonium
uptakes were positively correlated with the nutritional concentration in the environment and negatively
correlated with time.
