This paper examined the pupils’ enrolment and teacher requirement in primary and junior secondary
schools for the Universal Basic Education in Kwara State, Nigeria. As an ex-post facto and descriptive research,
the study population embraced all the 818 schools (561 primary and 167 secondary schools) in the State. The
sample was identical with the population as all the schools w ere involved in the study. The instrument used to
collect data was an inventory while the data collected were analyzed using percentages. It was found that the
average enrolment growth rate in prim ary schools was 3.7% while that of the junior secondary schools was
3.8%. The number of teachers at post in the schools did not match the number required in each of the years.
The State government would require additional 9128 teachers in primary schools and 4244 teachers in junior
secondary schools by the 2017. It was then concluded that not much has been done in achieving the basic
education in the State. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the Kwara State Government should
recruit more teachers for all primary and junior secondary schools in the State annually in order to meet up with
achieving the objectives of the Universal Basic Education programme and National Policy on Education .
